Programs Supported by Tahoe License Plates

The more than $4 million already contributed by Lake Tahoe license plate buyers are helping the California Tahoe Conservancy meet several high priority needs.  Combined with other funds, they help finance a number of major projects.  They can be particularly valuable as matching funds needed to qualify for special funding from various federal programs and other sources.

Soil Erosion Control: License plate revenues contribute significantly to soil erosion control projects needed to keep muddy runoff from spoiling the lake's world-famed clarity.

Watershed Restoration: These special funds also contribute to projects to restore wetlands, particularly in urbanized areas around the lake.  By absorbing muddy and polluted runoff, these wetlands help absorb the impact of development activities and improve the quality of water flowing into the lake.  They also provide wildlife habitat and help meet other resource needs.

Trails and Lake Access: The plates also help fund biking, hiking, and cross-country ski projects as well as aid efforts to provide better public access to the lake.  While there are already many miles of trail around the lake, there is a need to connect existing bits and pieces into a comprehensive network and provide new trails where they are wanted.  Such trail projects not only provide recreational opportunities but also help lessen traffic congestion and related air and water quality problems.  There is also a need to correct access problems that result in some beaches and recreation areas being damaged by overcrowding, while others that could provide relief are underused.

Economic Benefits: While all these projects are primarily aimed at preserving and imporving the lake's environment, they also have economic benefits.  They create jobs and provide income to the many businesses that provide materials and services.  They also enhance Tahoe's attractiveness to visitors, on whoom much of the local economy depends.
