PositionConservation Technician I - Forest Habitat Enhancement Crew Member

Primary DutiesThis is labor-intensive and physically demanding work. Work as an integral member of a nine-person crew on California Tahoe Conservancy forestry projects. Primary projects and activities will focus on removal of fuels for wildlife habitat enhancement, fuels reduction near homes, and preparation for prescribed fire. Various types of fuels are removed either by the production and burning of hand piles or by the operation of a wood-chipper. Secondary activities may include ecological restoration and revegetation projects, soil erosion control, road and trail obliteration and stabilization, native tree planting, assisting on prescribed fire projects (line construction, holding, mop up), slash pile burning, identifying property boundaries, forest stand cruising, marking of project areas, and project /warehouse maintenance as needed. Participate in routine safety talks and training sessions. Work may include technical conifer tree removal for aspen stand enhancement. Climbing/roping of trees may also be required, with in-house training to be provided. Drive workers to and from work sites in State vehicles. Assume responsibility for the care, maintenance, and security of State tools, property, and equipment. During the winter and spring seasons 12+ hours a day are common for burn projects, not to exceed 40 hours in a week.
Required Qualifications
  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License.
  • Ability to work safely and cooperatively in a group setting under a variety of working conditions.
  • Possession of work boots and clothing appropriate for both winter and summer working conditions (e.g., logging boots, snow boots, insulated clothing).
  • Ability to perform manual labor in rough terrain, lift heavy objects, and work for extended periods of time in various weather conditions. Work may require working in snow all day during winter season.
Desirable Qualifications
  • Upper division students or graduates majoring in natural resource related degree.
  • Good public relation skills.
  • Good organizational skills.
  • Familiarity with operation and maintenance of chainsaws, wood chippers, hand tools, and climbing equipment.
  • Completion of Basic 32-Hour Firefighter course (may be provided).
  • Possession of or willingness to obtain a class B driver's license.
